For those that live in Panama that are originally from North America or Europe, the concept of having a full time house keeper is very new. Sure, some of these expats have had maids that come by to clean once a week back in their home country, but the idea of having an employee live with you and cook and clean for you in your home at all times takes some getting used to.
The wage for a full time housekeeper in Panama is around $300 a month or about $3,600 a year. People are usually astonished at how cheap this is and right away want to hire someone. But, do take in to consideration that much of your privacy is lost because you always have someone around, even if they are in the other room. Also, you must be careful with the labor laws in Panama and you should study the numerous rights that a full time employee has and be careful to not violate them.
The downfall of having a full time housekeeper other than the loss of privacy, is that usually those women have a family and it sometimes is uncomfortable knowing that they are with you day and night when they have 4 kids at home that never get to see their mother.
In order to not be put in this situation, many expats enjoy a trustful maid that comes by 2 times a week for 4 hours each time. In this instance, you actually only pay $20 a session, or $160 a month and do not have to be worried about labor laws (though we advise to be kind and fair at all times), nor is your privacy taken away.
