Current, former presidents to meet today
The meeting of President Ricardo Martinelli with former presidents Mireya Moscoso, Ernesto Pérez Balladares and Martín Torrijos will take place at 1 p.m. today in the presidential palace, according to Minister of the Presidency Demetrius Jimmy Papadimitriu.
The meeting will be closed to the press, but the minister said it will have an “open agenda.”
“They want to have an open agenda where they will discuss national issues,” the minister said.
According to Papadimitriu, Martinelli organized the meeting so that all the living presidents who served after the fall of the military dictatorship can sit down and talk about “the direction of the country.”
Yesterday, Perez Balladares and Torrijos, both members of the opposition Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), met to discuss the meeting.
“We have agreed not to touch personal issues,” Perez Balladares said.
The meeting, however, is already off to a rocky start. yesterday, Minister of Public Security José Raúl Mulino accused members of the PRD of promote protests to tarnish the meeting between Martinelli and the former presidents.
